12 best things to do in Annecy

1. Wander the old town and its canals

The Thiou canal running through the old town of Annecy

The Vieille Ville is a car-free tangle of arcaded streets, pastel houses and canals fed by the Thiou river, with flower boxes on every bridge. Get lost along the Rue Sainte-Claire and the quays of the canals, and come back in the evening, when the restaurant terraces fill up.

2. See the Palais de l'Isle

The town's most famous sight is this 12th-century stone building shaped like a ship's prow in the middle of the canal. It has served as a palace, a courthouse and a prison, and it now houses a small museum of local history. The view of it from the Pont Perrière is the classic photo.

3. Take a lake cruise

Boats leave from the quay near the old town for one- or two-hour cruises around the lake, past the villages of Talloires and Duingt and the Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Some services let you hop off at villages along the way. It is the best way to see how the mountains drop into the water.

4. Swim in the lake

The lake is known for its exceptionally clear water, and in summer it is warm enough for swimming. In town, the free Plage d'Albigny and the Plage des Marquisats are the most popular beaches; around the lake, villages such as Talloires and Saint-Jorioz have quieter spots. Hire a paddleboard or a pedalo for the afternoon.

5. Cycle around the lake

A cycle path follows much of the western shore, and the full loop around the lake is roughly 40 km. Rent a bike or e-bike in town and stop for a swim or lunch on the way. Families can do a shorter flat stretch along the western shore.

6. Relax in the Jardins de l'Europe

Next to the old town, these lakeside gardens shaded by huge trees lead to the Pont des Amours, the Bridge of Love, a favourite spot for couples and photographers, with views down the canal to the lake and the mountains.

7. Visit the Château d'Annecy

The Château d'Annecy museum above the old town

Above the old town, the former castle of the Counts of Geneva now houses a museum of regional art, history and the natural life of Alpine lakes. Even if you skip the museum, climb up for the view over the rooftops to the lake.

8. Explore Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard

On the eastern shore, the village of Talloires sits in a sheltered bay with one of the loveliest settings on the lake. Nearby, the turreted Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard looks like something out of a fairy tale and is open for summer visits. Get there by bus, bike or boat.

9. Walk through the Gorges du Fier

About 20 minutes from town, a walkway clings to the walls of this narrow gorge high above a rushing river. The visit takes about an hour and is open in the warmer months only, so check the season before you go.

10. Fly over the lake

The Col de la Forclaz above the eastern shore is one of the most popular paragliding spots in Europe. Tandem flights with an instructor give an unforgettable view of the turquoise water; book a day or two ahead in summer and keep your plans flexible for the weather.

11. Head into the mountains

For views over the whole lake, drive or take the bus up the Semnoz mountain, or hike the trails of Mont Veyrier above the town. In winter, the ski resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand are about an hour away.

12. Time your trip for a festival

In June, the International Animation Film Festival fills the town with film fans, and in early August the Fête du Lac ends with a spectacular fireworks show over the water. Both are popular, so book well ahead.
