The south of France season by season
Spring (March to May)
Spring is the most underrated season in the south of France. From April, Provence is green and full of wildflowers, the markets are back in full swing and the Riviera is pleasantly warm, with highs around 18 to 22°C in Nice. The sea is still cool for swimming until late May. The mistral, a cold, strong wind, can blow through the Rhône valley and Provence in spring, so pack a jacket.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is beach season, with hot, dry days, a warm sea and long evenings on café terraces. June is the best summer month: the lavender blooms, the sea reaches swimming temperature and the peak crowds haven't arrived yet. July and August bring temperatures above 30°C, busy beaches, heavy traffic on the coast roads and the highest hotel prices of the year, especially in August, when much of France is on holiday.
Autumn (September to November)
September is the sweet spot: the sea is at its warmest, the summer crowds have gone and prices start to fall. October is still mild, with highs around 20°C on the coast, harvest season in the vineyards and very few tourists. From November, rain becomes more frequent, and many beach clubs and seasonal restaurants close.
Winter (December to February)
The Riviera has the mildest winter in mainland France, with highs of 12 to 14°C in Nice and plenty of sunny days. It's too cold for the beach but ideal for walking, museums and events like the Nice Carnival and the Menton Lemon Festival in February. Inland Provence is colder and quieter, with some village hotels and restaurants closed until spring.

The best time to visit Provence

The best time for beaches and swimming
The Mediterranean is warm enough for most swimmers from mid-June to late September, when the water reaches around 22 to 25°C. September is often better than June: the sea has had all summer to warm up and the beaches are quieter.
The cheapest time to visit the south of France
The cheapest time to visit is from November to March, outside the Christmas holidays and the Nice Carnival. For the best balance of good weather and lower prices, aim for April, early May or October. Avoid the weeks of the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix in May, when prices rise all along the coast.
When to avoid the south of France
The hardest time is mid-July to late August: crowded beaches, traffic jams on the coast roads, heatwaves inland and the highest prices of the year. If those are your only dates, book early, stay somewhere with air conditioning and visit the big sights early in the morning.
